Back in Delhi

After an amazing two days in Agra and Jaipur, we made it safely back to Delhi. The 30 minute flight back was a treat compared to the 6+ hours we would've spent on a train (thought it would've only cost us $6! Or a dollar an hour, as Alf put it) especially since we stumbled upon a very interesting store in the Delhi airport. I couldn't believe my eyes when I saw products like Snapple, Hershey's kisses and Snyder's pretzels on the racks! But our jaws dropped when we saw the most delicious American delicacy of all.....Voortman cookies!!!! FYI, my Father, the great Roger Basse, owns a Voortman distributorship in Michigan. The company is Canadian with a Dutch CEO and apparently they really do export all over the world, even to India!!!

Alf did a recap of our time in Jaipur, but I'm also going to fill in all of the English speakers who may be reading. We really enjoyed our time there....it's called the Pink City because all of the buildings are a nice salmon color and it gives the city a lot of character.  We stayed at a gorgeous hotel that was a renovated palace and had an amazing rooftop restaurant which we went to every night. We did a lot of shopping at the markets and saw the Amber Fort, which is on top of a huge hill and has breathtaking views. We also visited a lot of temples which were ornate and gorgeous. We also went to the Hawa Mahal, which is a palace with stained glass windows and many little openings looking out onto the street. Apparently, it was a place where the royal woman could go to look out on the city without being seen back in the day.

The only glitch in the system now is that the food is catching up with us. Everything is very spicy and while I love me some good Lavapies Shapla (my #1 Indian restaurant in Madrid) on a Sunday afternoon, it is quite different to eat only that for a week straight, especially in this heat. Yesterday, we gave in and sought out a McDonalds in the Jaipur city center. And before you judge, you must spend four days outside in 104 degree heat eating only spicy food! Alf was jonesing for a hamburger, but when we got there and looked at the menu, there was no beef to speak of, only chicken and vegetarian (duh!)!!! But our chicken hamburgers were glorious and rejuvenated us for the rest of the day.

Now, on to see more sites in Delhi. We're heading off to the Hoho bus (hehe) and are going to make our way around the city, visiting the Red Fort, India Gate and Lotus temple.

p.s. Back home update: Lily is doing fine at her puppy camp in the country....no wonder, since Alf revealed that he had reserved her a "single" kennel suite. What a spoiled little beagle.
